     Toronto Stock Exchange and S&P/TSX Composite Index 

    The stock exchange of Canada is known as the Toronto Stock Exchange and it is abbreviated as TSX. This stock exchange ranks number 9 in the world as far as market capitalisation is concerned. 




    There are close to 1600 securities listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange including ETFs and other financial products. The TSX deals with so many segments like stocks, options, futures, ETFs, energy markets etc. 

    The major index of the Toronto stock exchange is the S&P/TSX Composite index. This index is composed of 250 high capitalised companies of the Toronto Stock Exchange. These companies are related to many different sectors. 

    The S&P/TSX Composite index replaced the TSX 300 Index which was used earlier. 

    Eligibility Criteria for a company to be included in TSX Index

    There are mainly 3 criteria for a company to be included in the S&P TSX Composite Index which is as follows:
    1. Market Capitalisation: Any company has to represent the minimum weightage of  0.05% of the index. The minimum weighted average price of any company must be C$1 over the past three months and over the last 3 trading days prior to its review by Exchange. 
    2. Liquidity: The trading volume and the no. of transactions must exceed at least 0.025% of the sum of all eligible securities' trading volume. The companies are capped at a maximum of 15% for value, volume and transactions. 
    3. Domicile: Companies must be listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and be incorporated under Canadian laws.

    TSX Trading Timings

    The Toronto Stock Exchange has regular trading sessions from Monday to Friday. TSX is closed on Saturday, Sunday and on the other Holidays announced by the TSX in advance.

    Normal trading Session - 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET
    Post-market session       - 4:15 PM to 5:00 PM ET
